Koutoubia mosque, very much the crowning jewel of Jemaa el fna Square, is in this photograph a silent guardian staring across the horse carriages. Koutoubia, or "Bookseller's" mosque, dates back to the 12th Century. During the time of Leon the African, one hundred manuscript vendors had stores installed at its base.
